GAMELINES RANGE AND CLUB NEWS May 6th, 2013

Thanks to everyone who pitched in this weekend at the range rebuild. Saturday we were a bit slim but we had a decent turn out Sunday and got the most important things done. The new lower loop brings us back into the burn area and we have recaptured some of the more dramatic terrain shots we had lost in the last couple of years. Bring extra arrows… you might need them! Steve, Kim and Ren all did a great job coordinating the weekend. Especial thanks to them and to Gloria, who managed the sign-ins and communications from the picnic area.

We’d like your feedback, as members, on what we have done.

Now here is Steve’s summary of what we did and what you can expect!

Respectfully, Bob Radocy

My thanks to everyone who participated in either, or both, of the range work days! Because of your efforts, we completed everything possible. If you are not aware, the range has changed a lot... What was target 9 has been moved, and the shot angle reworked. This shot is now taken from the top of a rock outcropping. Please do not shoot these targets from the ground. There have been way to many arrows that escape the range area and have turned up in some unfortunate places. So far, no one has been hurt. So target 9 is now moved, and the official new route goes straight towards the plains to what was target 14: bedded elk and caribou targets. Old targets 10 through 13 have been removed. You will see some yellow tape across the old trail, this is to help close that former area down to archery club members. As a club, we should no longer be over where those targets used to be.

Yes, we deleted a few targets – we also added a few new stations! (Old called targets, the new called stations, just to help differentiate between them.) We now have a total of 22 shooting station. The new stations were put together from the new targets purchased, mixed with targets from those targets that were eliminated (10 through 13). Each new station has 2 to 4 3D targets.

Where did we put them? When you shoot the range, starting as always at the picnic area, there is no difference until you get to the tree stand – which was target 4, and is now station 4. From the antelope pit blind, head down hill and follow the signs, here is a summary:

Station 5 – two deer, although we are still waiting for the Big 10 Deer from our order with Rinehart
Station 6 – Two sheep, one standing one bedded – down hill
Station 7 – Moose, black cat, and coyote – down hill
Station 8 – Grizzly, black bear, and deer – down hill
Station 9 – Elk, mountain lion – shoot up hill, walk back
Station 10 – 2 deer and a hog – continues down hill.

After you get your arrows from 10, proceed around the hill to your left, and then walk back up the hill to approach former target 5 (Grizzly, goat, and 2 sheep) cliff shot from the other side of the hill. This is a steep hike out, we are looking at what else might done along the way up to make this a bit more enjoyable… (No matter what we do, you will still have to walk out up the hill…) From the upper cliff shot, walk out as always. Note, if you do not wish to shoot the lower course, the trail to the cliff shot is still open from the tree stand, and can still be used as before.

The chores still left unfinished from our work day: We need a couple bow racks made and placed for stations 5 and 6. No targets got caulked, so that remains to do.  There is a new shed being put up, and range patrol, too.

Contact me (Steve) to arrange to put in a range work day before all the chores are completed in the next few weeks!

Contact Bob Radocy to schedule a range patrol day to complete your work day requirement!

In other areas of concern, someone has been spotted shooting their way off the course. Sounds to me like they are “stump” shooting out. I have done that any number of times when going in and out of national forest areas. However, this is not the national forest. There is now a horse being kept down by the gate, and homes in the area. To be clear, there can be no shooting except at the targets and bales on the range. Shooting your way back to the parking area is not allowed, and will cost you your membership if you are caught doing so. Period. This type of display is not just about your joy of shooting, this behavior could cost us every club membership if we lose our lease.
